King Charles III resumed his public duties on Tuesday, visiting a cause that hits close to home for the royal.

The monarch visited the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre on April 30, his first public engagement since announcing his cancer diagnosis in February. King Charles, 75, was accompanied by Queen Camilla, 76, and they connected with cancer patients receiving treatment.

The King reportedly sat with patients as he talked about the importance of early detection. Sharing a common struggle, he revealed a personal detail about his cancer journey, which made the patients feel a "personal connection" with the monarch.

King Charles told patients that he, too, was scheduled for his treatment that afternoon, just after visiting the hospital, according to ITV's Chris Ship.

"Many patients said afterwards they felt a personal connection with him as he understands what they had been through and are still going through," Ship wrote in a social media post.

The royals also spoke with the hospital staff, and they learned about the research done at the hospital with the support of Cancer Research U.K., where the King now serves as the patron.

When asked how his cancer treatment was going, King Charles answered, "I'm alright, thank you very much. Not too bad."

The King also appeared emotional during the trip, the Daily Mail's Rebecca English revealed on X, formerly Twitter.

David Probert, University College Hospital London chief executive, praised King Charles and Queen Camilla for bringing energy to the cancer patients and staff.

"It was a wonderful atmosphere. The energy was high. Their Majesties were full of enthusiasm and engaging with the patients and most importantly for our staff," Probert said, according to People.

Following the trip, Buckingham Palace thanked the UCLH and the Macmillan Cancer Centre for their work on cancer research and the support they provide cancer patients.

"Wishing the very best to all those continuing cancer treatment on their path to recovery," the official Royal Family Instagram account wrote.

In February, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles was diagnosed with a form of cancer during a procedure for benign prostate enlargement. It was not revealed what type of cancer it was.

The King took time off his public duties to rest and undergo treatment following the announcement.
