Fat Joe Calls Out Rappers For ‘Femininity’ In Hip-Hop: 'In My Era, I Don’t Think We Would Have Seen That’
Fat Joe had a few choice words for where hip-hop stands today — and he isn't thrilled about it.
During an Instagram live, the "Lean Back" lyricist recalled the days when the scene was more rugged, gritty, and centered a masculine persona whereas today's most popular artists continue to challenge gender norms.
The rapper, real name Joseph Antonio Cartagena, was clear to differentiate those who are actually gay from male artists who identify as straight, but still embody a feminine image, saying, "Don't misplace my words for the LBGT."
"If you're gay and you love to be gay...that's your s**t. That don't got nothing to do with me. I got a best friend, a brother who's gay — I don't give a f**k," Joe, 53, said per HipHop DX.
"So you got guys, who I don't think they're gay but they're painting their nails, or they walking with Birkin bags. Unfortunately, it's sad to have originators and then you have a lot of running with the swag or running with the style.
"Paint your nails, use a bag, wear a dress. I wonder if in my era, if it would be accepted like that if it was a trend. It would blow my mind to see what rapper would do that," the Terror Squad Boss explained.
"I'm just saying, in my era, I don't think we would have seen that."
The rap OG also commented on boxing champ Ryan Garcia's recent outburst, where he accused Devin Haney of committing a "hate crime" when Haney shoved him while shooting promo for their recent fight, leading to Garcia's claims that he identifies "as a woman."
"This femininity — this thing that's going on in boxing — you know the s**t we see...and he's saying he's a girl. Come on man, you f*****g around!" the South Bronx native stated.
Joe, who often speaks candidly during his lives, mentioned that Tupac Shakur's estate threatened legal action against Drake for using an AI-generated version of his voice.
"I thought it was creative — using the AI Tupac and pushing the envelope — but I got no horse in this game," he said. "I wish they would all get along."
