Kate Middleton Considers Appointing Her Sister Pippa Middleton As Her Lady-In-Waiting
Reports from royal insiders suggest that Kate Middleton is contemplating appointing her sister, Pippa Middleton, as her lady-in-waiting in the event she ascends to the throne.
Kate, 42, has refrained from appointing official companions, a move that goes against royal traditions. As Prince William prepares to ascend the throne, leading to her eventual role as queen, experts speculate that she may opt to enlist the assistance of companions to aid her in her duties.
"The job of a monarch and a consort isn't getting any smaller. The letters, the correspondence, the emails are growing every day," royal historian Kate Williams said during an appearance on True Royalty TV's 'The Royal Beat: Back in Time.' "So, when Catherine becomes Queen, the levels of tours, the levels of letters, the level of receptions, will still require this assistance. So, I think she will have to appoint some ladies-in-waiting."
Williams suggested that Princess Kate's sister, Pippa, would be the likely candidate for the role.
"I think traditionally, we might expect Catherine to appoint her sister Pippa, because Catherine is so famously close to her family," Williams suspects. "She doesn't have companions because she's so close to her mother and her sister. I think we might possibly expect that Pippa might be someone she might appoint."
Ailsa Anderson, the former communications secretary to Queen Elizabeth, weighed in: "It's actually quite nice to have somebody who you've known and trusted to be by your side in those big events because when you've always got to be on show."
However, as Williams pointed out, Pippa may not be inclined towards what essentially amounts to a full-time assistant role. "Pippa has her own life — three children, and a busy life of her own," she said. "It's a fascinating question."
