Walmart is set to close down three more stores later this month, bringing the total number of store closures thus far in 2024 to eight.

The Walmart locations to shutter are listed in California, Milwaukee and Wisconsin. According to the Business Insider, layoff notices have already been filed in the states of Wisconsin and California.

The company had blamed poor financial performance as the reason for the store closings earlier this year. Walmart told the Insider in January that workers affected by the closings are eligible for a transfer to another location.

So far, a total of five California locations and one each in Maryland, Ohio and Wisconsin have been confirmed to close or have already permanently shutdown this year.

Here's the complete list of Walmart store closings as of May 2024:

California (5 Stores):

  • 605 Fletcher Parkway, El Cajon
  • 40580 Albrae St., Fremont
  • Neighborhood Market - 4080 Douglas Blvd., Granite Bay
  • 2121 Imperial Ave., San Diego
  • 2753 E. Eastland Center Drive, West Covina

Maryland (1 store):

  • 1238 Putty Hill Ave., Towson

Ohio (1 store):

  • 3579 S. High St., Columbus

Wisconsin (1 store):

In 2023, Walmart closed a total of 23 stores across 14 states and Washington, D.C., TheStreet noted. Illinois was most affected with eight store closings.

"These stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years," said Walmart in a press release at the time.

Despite closing down locations, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based hypermarket chain said it plans to open or up-size over 150 of its stores in the next five years.

About 650 of its stores will also be renovated to the brand's new "Store of the Future" concept, the Insider added.

Walmart isn't the only company closing multiple stores this year. Just five months into the year and brands like Macy's, Family Dollar, Express and Rite Aid have all announced closings. Some included layoffs.
