Former 'Young and the Restless' Star Victoria Rowell Launches Kickstarter for TV Pilot 'The Rich and the Ruthless' [VIDEO]
Victoria Rowell, who played Drucilla Winters on the soap The Young and the Restless, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a sitcom pilot inspired by her time in daytime.
Rowell pitched her soapy, behind-the-scenes spoof The Rich and the Ruthless as "Soap Dish meets The Office."
On the campaign page, Rowell teases the plot of her show: "The show is centered around the iconic Soap Opera, The Rich and The Ruthless. The man behind the show is Augustus Barringer, He is as brilliant as he is cut throat which allowed him to build the show up from nothing to the Soap Opera empire it is today. He is surrounded by his twin children angling for money and power, and underling Executive angling for his own slice of power. But the real circus of the show involves the colorful cast of "actors" on the soap that may be more spoiled, more ruthless, and more calculating than the executives."
The project will only be funded if at least $50,000 is pledged by Wednesday Aug 28, 5:15pm EST. At the time of publishing, there were 64 backers and a total of $2,454 pledged.
"I am the executive producer, creator and head writer, and I have a fantastic writing team," Rowell told We Love Soaps. "I can't go into details, but there are noted soap writers who want in. The story is black-led and the soap opera [within the show] is owned by Augustus Barringer, who is an African American with two spoiled children. He's trying to run the show and keep it on the air.
"We tell the story from the perspective of real-time, with soap operas trying to stay on the air and the lives of the characters. It's a soap opera about a soap opera, but even more, about the lives of these people. You really invest in the people more than them just being soap stars. I think that is extremely important in the storytelling. Although this is a fictional piece of work, we are endeavoring to explore the complexities of who they are offstage, and between each other."
