Filmmaker and star Morgan Spurlock of the jaw-dropping documentary 'Super Size Me' died Thursday in upstate New York.

He was 53.

Spurlock's family reported to 'NBC News' that he died on May 23 due to complications amid his battle with cancer. His brother Craig Spurlock — who worked alongside him for multiple projects — told the news outlet that it was hard to say goodbye.

"It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan," he began. "Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him."

Spurlock's Oscar-nominated documentary was created in 2004 as a social experiment which focused on the journey of the star attempting to sustain himself by solely ingesting the McDonald's menu for an entire month.

As the film unfolds, the daredevil experiences weight gain, a massive energy crash, and a list of bizarre side-effects. According to Surplock, he "consumed over 30 pounds of sugar. That's an average of a pound of sugar a day."

Through the course of the documentary his liver turned to fat, cholesterol increased by 65 points, and libido had tanked, in addition to nearly doubling his risk for heart disease and being left with terrible mood swings, cravings, and massive headaches.

At his own expense, Spurlock was on a mission to expose corporate giants for their contribution to the epidemic of obesity and prioritizing profits over the health of American consumers. It was reported that six weeks after the release of 'Super Size Me,' McDonald's discontinued the extra-large serving size option.

The filmmaker also produced other projects including the sequel, 'Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!' (2020), 'Where In The World is Osama Bin Laden?' (2008), 'ComicCon IV: A Fans Hope' (2019), and more.

His family has confirmed that Spurlock died peacefully surrounded by family and friends. The director is survived by his two sons, Laken and Kallen, his parents, Phyllis and Ben, and brothers Craig and Barry.
