After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's informal visit to Nigeria, Meghan has reportedly drawn comparisons to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana — to the disappointment of Prince William.

Meghan's choice of attire during the tour sparked speculation, particularly her selection of a gold necklace, reminiscent of one worn by Diana during her own visit to Nigeria with then-Prince Charles in 1990. Additionally, Meghan, 42, wore another necklace adorned with a diamond cross, rumored to have once belonged to Diana.

But doubts arose regarding the authenticity of the cross's connection to Diana, as a source close to the late Princess of Wales stated they "didn't recognize [the necklace] at all."

"Diana was ever the professional and she generally avoided wearing religious motifs of any kind because they have the potential to offend people, so she would never usually wear such a thing," an insider said according to the Scottish Daily Express.

Diana was only captured wearing a cross publicly on two occasions; firstly in October 1987 and later during a visit to Brazil in April 1991.

Despite Harry and Meghan's determination to forge their own path, mirroring Diana's defiance of royal norms, insiders suggest that Prince William is displeased with their decisions.

A source shared with 'Closer' that "William doesn't want to deprive Harry of the right to celebrate their mother's legacy. What bothers him is how Meghan's paraded around as the modern-day version of Diana, he finds that beyond tasteless and offensive, not only to him but also to Kate."

"To add insult to injury, Harry's not consulted with him about these trips abroad and future plans they've apparently got in the works to celebrate Diana's life and legacy," the insider continued. "The fact that the tension with the Sussexes is now impacting celebrating their mother's legacy is beyond the pale for William, but it's not as though he can really speak about it with Charles and Camilla because there's obviously history there with Diana being estranged from the royals so he's feeling pretty alone on this."

Princess Diana, who was the first wife of Charles III, was an international icon known for her fashion, activism and glamour.
