Taye Diggs Admits ‘Set It Up’ Co-Star Lucy Liu Was His ‘Celebrity Hall Pass’
Taye Diggs revealed the surprising romantic agreement he had with his then-wife of ten years Idina Menzel.
Diggs revealed to 'PEOPLE' who he chose as his "celebrity hall pass" during their marriage. Interestingly enough, Menzel had her own romantic "hall pass" as well.
"I remember Idina's was Colin Farrell, and then she immediately got a movie with him," Diggs, 53, admitted. "Mine at the time was Lucy Liu, and that's right when I got 'Ally McBeal,' " he said, referring to his role as lawyer Jackson Duper on the Fox series that ran from 1998-2002.
Diggs and Liu, 55, did eventually reunite, co-starring together in Netflix's romcom 'Set It Up.' The 2018 film followed two assistants in need of a break from the office who team up to trick their "workaholic" bosses into falling in love.
During an episode of 'The Drew Barrymore Show,' Diggs revealed he wined-and-dined Liu while working with her on 'Ally McBeal' in the early 2000s. He recalled becoming "really anxious" one day picking her up, nearly causing a car accident.
"I go and pick her up. I was already nervous... then my anxiety hit and as I was driving, I remember making a left turn on Laurel Canyon [in Los Angeles] and I was so nervous that I was driving on the wrong side of the road," the 53-year-old explained.
"And Lucy went, 'Hey, hey, hey.' I tried to play it off like I meant to do it. But I think I ended up telling her I was extremely nervous," he continued. "Very embarrassing, but I got through it."
Former 'Rent' musical costars Menzel, 52, and Diggs separated in 2013, citing "the interracial aspect" of their relationship as a major factor in their decision to part ways. The ex-couple married in 2003 before welcoming their son, Walker Nathaniel, six years later.
Diggs proceeded to date 'Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood' reality star Apryl Jones in January 2022, which he now claims left him too exhausted to date.
