7 Times We Want To Shake Colin Bridgerton So He'll Recognize The Romance
Members of the ton, 'Bridgerton,' is back and steamier than ever.
The first four episodes of the hit Regency Era Netflix series were released on May 16th. This season focuses on the friends-to-lovers (fingers crossed!) narrative between Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan, and Colin Brigerton, played by Luke Newton.
The tension between the two has been building through the past two seasons. With Penelope's unrequited love now center screen, fans of the show are able to get a closer look at Colin Bridgerton's overall... obliviousness?
While the third oldest Bridgerton boy returns from his worldly travels a changed man, his interactions with his dear friend leave audiences asking themselves: "HOW IS HE NOT PICKING UP WHAT SHE IS PUTTING DOWN?"
These are the top moments in this season of 'Bridgerton' so far that leave watchers wanting to shake some romantic sense into Colin Bridgerton.
Warning: Season three spoilers!
"There is a reason I seek you out at every social assembly."
While the painfully heartfelt nature of this speech has the Whistledown-obsessed world swooning, it cannot be ignored that Colin gives this speech without a thought to why he may be feeling this way. "You are the one person that has ever made me feel comfortable." The girl he has been best friends with is the only person he feels truly comfortable around and deeply misses the friendship of? Only in Bridgerton's mind would these facts add up to equal platonic.
"We were kids!"
Once again, the master of conclusions presents his reasons that his best bro Penelope Featherington was so free around them when they met. It's because, "We were kids!"
It is definitely not because she has been in love with you since the moment that you met. No, don't look at the light and hope and fear that fill her eyes. Nope. Not love. Just youth obviously.
"We needed a place to be alone."
Colin's oversight leads him to continue creating more and more romantic situations. As he coaches Penelope on how to secure a husband, he decides the two must find a place to practice alone. Alone? With a man? In Regency Era England? The scandal creates itself.
Furthermore, the theme of the season is that the only ones truly above the rules are those who are married. Therefore, Bridgerton breaking these rules insinuates a promise for something greater later. Yet, he does not seem to see it that way.
"I'm the perfect person to practice on."
When Colin decides Penelope needs a person to practice flirting on, he sees no problem in offering himself as tribute. It is unclear whether Colin does not recognize himself as an eligible bachelor or could not possibly fathom that Penelope could be an eligible match herself. Overall, there is a lack of thinking things through.
"She is neither suffering nor despondent. She is seeking a husband."
When Colin speaks to his sister Eliose, Penelope's former best friend, Colin assures her that Penelope is absolutely fine. She is just looking for a husband. Eloise and any viewer who is paying one-iota of attention, recognizes that this quest is a complete shift from the usual Penelope.
Such a dramatic shift WOULD imply that something is wrong. How could her guy best friend miss such an obvious and massive emotional crisis? Well, it does seem he's missing a lot recently.
"But you would already be dead."
Ok, Colin, what was this? In a moment of desperation, romance, the culmination of everything seen going forward, Bridgerton blurts out one of the most silly-boy lines in the show. A disgraced Penelope Featherington begs Colin to kiss her for she fears that, if she does not, she will never have been kissed.
She laments, "I would die and it would kill me." Colin, in a radical moment of romance says, "But you would already be dead." Just...what???
"I wish very much for your happiness."
In this classic friends-to-lovers moment, when Penelope declares it might be in their best interest to keep distance from each other, Colin kindly says, "I wish very much for your happiness." While engaged watchers cannot blame him for shying away from this intimate and vulnerable moment, they can still put their pillows over their faces, annoyed that he won't just grab her and kiss her again.
Colin Bridgerton is a loveable buffoon, and, with half the season left to be released, we will hopefully see him find his footing in this world of love and romance.
The second half of 'Bridgerton' season 3 will be released on June 13th.
