Michelle Obama’s Mother, Marian Robinson, Dead At 86
Marian Robinson, mother of former first lady Michelle Obama, died on Friday per a heartfelt announcement made by the former first lady.
She was 86.
Fellow users on Twitter, now known as X, sent their condolences and well wishes to Obama who described her mother as her "rock."
"My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed. She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today," Obama, 60, wrote.
Obama spoke about her mother's wisdom, understanding, and grace on the former president's Medium account.
"Her wisdom came off as almost innate, as something she was born with, but in reality it was hard-earned, fashioned by her deep understanding that the world's roughest edges could always be sanded down with a little grace," the outlet states.
Robinson raised seven children on the red-lined South Side of Chicago. As a young woman, she studied to become a teacher prior to becoming a secretary when she fell in love with fellow south-sider and jazz-enthusiast Fraser Robinson. The duo went on to raise Craig and Michelle.
"Bless your mom for raising one of the best First Ladies we ever had", one X user responded. "I am so sorry your mama passed away First Lady Michelle. She was a beautiful woman who raised a phenomenal lady herself," another replied.
The post was signed off by the Obama family that stated they will spend the rest of their lives trying to live up to her example. "In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life," it reads. "We will all miss her greatly, and we wish she were here to offer us some perspective, to mend our heavy hearts with a laugh and a dose of her wisdom."
