Olivia Munn found herself very emotional upon returning home after undergoing a double mastectomy.

On March 13th, the actress announced to the world via Instagram that she had been diagnosed with cancer. She wrote, “I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I hope by sharing this it will help others find comfort, inspiration, and support on their own journey.”

On May 24th, she underwent surgery to remove the disease. The procedure took ten hours. While in the midst of this lengthy surgery, doctors found a large section of carcinoma in situ in her right breast.

With the findings during the surgery and the advice of doctor’s prior to going under, Munn was confident that the double mastectomy was the correct call. She told PEOPLE that hearing the doctors found the “tangerine-sized” pre-invasive cancer helped her because "Hearing that news gave me peace that I’d made the right decision.”

Immediately after the surgery, the star reports feeling numb to the experience. “I saw myself for the first time and I was in shock. It was incredibly hard…It was a shock. It was a shock to my system. I had such a hard time, I remember just looking in the mirror with him and just having no emotion, just taking in what he was saying."

Back in March, Munn told the outlet that she had remained relatively tearless throughout the experience. “Surprisingly, I’ve only cried twice. I guess I haven’t felt like there was time to cry. My focus narrowed and I tabled any emotions that I felt would interfere with my ability to stay clear headed.”

It was upon returning home that she felt the wave of emotion come through. “When I got home, I undressed and looked in the mirror again, and that’s when I just absolutely broke down.”

Staying true to the statement in her original Instagram post, Munn is using her journey to raise breast cancer awareness and give other women the strength to fight. “All I want is for more women to be able to advocate for themselves.”
