Trump Shares How Barron, Melania Handled His Guilty Conviction In No-Holds-Barred Interview With Dr. Phil
Donald Trump got candid about how his legal battle affected his family.
On Thursday, the former U.S. president sat down for an interview with Dr. Phil. During their chat, the host asked if there had been a "blowback on Barron because he's younger and more vulnerable." Trump said it was "not easy" for his youngest child, but he never spoke about the issue with him, probably to avoid hurting him.
"It's not easy," the father of five replied before praising Barron. "He's a great kid -- he's a good student, he got accepted to different colleges. Some of those colleges all of a sudden, they're rioting all over the place. But he's a good boy. He's a tall boy, very tall, and he's a great kid. Good-looking kid. And, you know, he's going to be at college."
Trump continued, "But he doesn't say it, and I think he doesn't say it because he doesn't want to hurt me, and he thinks it's possibly a hurtful conversation."
He said his predicament affected his family, and it was "really very unfair." He also went on to praise his children and spouse.
"I have a very good family; I have good kids, I have a wonderful wife," Trump continued.
He also explained Melania's struggle and called the reports about him "fake." According to him, it was not easy for the former first lady to "read this kind of stuff that's fake." The "Apprentice" alum also admitted that such instances affected him "more" because it involved his family.
"It certainly is not a good thing, and it affects me more than it would if it were just about me. I wish it would just be about me," Trump said.
Dr. Phil asked how Melania was holding up. Trump believed she was good but didn't think it was easy for his wife. He also hinted that the ex-FLOTUS was like their son; she wouldn't discuss bad stuff with him because she knew what he was going through.
"And I think if it wasn't good, she wouldn't want to tell me about it, to be honest with you, because she sees that I'm fighting like hell. I'm trying to become president and make America great again," Trump said.
Although there were various speculations about Trump and Melania's marriage, with some alleging they appeared to have a "completely transactional marriage," the former first couple had nothing but positive words to say about their relationship.
In a past interview with Larry King for CNN, Trump said they never argued in their first five years of marriage.
"We're just very compatible, we get along," Trump said.
"It was a great chemistry and energy. We had a great time. We started to talk. And, you know, something was there right away," Melania added in the same interview.
Melania, Barron, and Ivanka arrived at Trump Tower after Donald's guilty conviction. His recent legal battle reportedly drew the family closer and even thawed Melania and Ivanka's tense relationship.
