Deputy Eddie Duran shot Air Force Airman Roger Fortson to death based off of a stare.

He was 23.

Fortson was a member of the Air Force who served in combat zones overseas. The serviceman, who most recently served at Hurlburt Field, was "helping to raise his 16-year-old brother," according to a statement from his mother.

On May 3rd, 2024, Fortson was shot to death at his apartment complex in Fort Walton Beach.

According to 'Atlanta Black Star,' he was outside his own house at the time of the shooting. He was on a video call with his girlfriend planning a trip. After the shooting, he was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Florida sheriff's deputy, Deputy Eddie Duran, opened fire on Fortson after a stare that he perceived to be aggressive. As the investigation continues, the basis of the sheriff's deputy's actions was eye contact.

The sheriff's report from the Okaloosa Sheriff's Office internal investigation states that Duran ssaid, "When I saw his eyes, I saw aggression. It was a stare that was fixated 100% on me, not eyebrows raised, not, 'Hey what's going on? Why are you here?' It was a stare...that showed me there was aggression."

In May, body camera footage of the shooting was released. Based on the footage, it is clear that minimal action was taken by Fortson before Duran began to shoot. It can be seen that Fortson is holding a gun in the video, but it is pointed at the ground. His hand is in the air in a stop motion before he is shot.

Duran attested that the tilt of the gun suggested violence and that Fortson took a step towards him.

Eddie Duran was fired from the sheriff's department.

However, Fortson's family demands more action is taken in the wake of their loss.

"I put so many pictures of my baby on social media...I want justice for my child," Chantemekki Fortson, Roger's mother said according to 'NBC News.' "You're not going to throw me a bone. Take his credentials. Take his pension. Bring up charges against him."
