Michigan Couple Wins $842.4 Million In Powerball Jackpot: ‘Elated And Overwhelmed’
A ticket purchased on New Year's Day rendered two Midwest residents winners of an $843.4 million Powerball Lottery jackpot.
A mid-Michigan couple and a lawyer from the west side of the state were announced on Tuesday, as they snapped photos alongside the massive nine-figure check.
According to the 'Associated Press,' the winning numbers were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49, and red Powerball: 1.
Paid to the order of The Breakfast Club, a representative for the club and attorney Mark Harder claimed the middle-aged couple were "elated and overwhelmed, thrilled and nervous" since being told they had a winning ticket.
"They've gone from shock and sleepless nights to giving careful thought as to how this once-in-a-lifetime event will transform their lives," Harder said, per the news outlet.
"The morning after the drawing, we heard through the news that the winning ticket had been sold here," Harder explained. "[The husband] looked up the ticket numbers on his phone, and he was so stunned he dropped his phone."
In terms of what's to come for the new millionaires — who opted for a cash lump sum of $305 million after taxes — the husband plans to continue working for awhile longer.
The two expect to travel more and are considering buying a property in Florida for when Michigan winters "get to be a bit too much."
"Up until now, we've led a comfortable life and anticipated retiring someday," Harder read in a statement given by the winners. "Now, we're not financially bound to any specific timetable. The world and our opportunities have opened up in some incredible ways."
According to the media outlet, Food Lion is also set to receive $50,000 in commission for selling the golden ticket. The store's owners claimed they'd share winnings with their employees in addition to donating to food pantries and other charities.
