Actor Donald Sutherland died on Thursday in Miami.

He was 88.

According to 'The Hollywood Reporter,' the critically acclaimed actor died after a battle with an unnamed "long illness," leaving behind a legacy of iconic roles and unforgettable performances.

Sutherland's remarkable career included roles in classic films such as 'The Hunger Games,' 'M*A*S*H,' and 'Klute.' His portrayal of President Snow in 'The Hunger Games' franchise introduced him to a new generation of fans, cementing his status as a versatile actor capable of delivering compelling performances in a wide range of genres.

Helen Mirren shared a statement with 'The Hollywood Reporter' about the loss of her friend.

"Donald Sutherland was one of the smartest actors I ever worked with. He had a wonderful enquiring brain, and a great knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity, and with a seriousness about his profession as an actor. This all made him into the legend of film that he became," Mirren, 78, said. "He was my colleague and became my friend. I will miss his presence in this world."

Donald's son, Kiefer Sutherland, took to Twitter, now known as X, to express his sorrow.

"With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," he wrote. "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

Throughout his career, Donald honed his ability to immerse himself fully into his characters, making him a favorite amongst directors and a beloved figure to moviegoers around the world. His contributions to the film industry were recognized with numerous awards and nominations.

Donald Sutherland is survived by his five children; Kiefer, Rossif, Roeg, Rachel, Angus, his grandchildren, and his wife, Francine.
