The relationship between Usher's mother and his ex-wife is getting some new details added.

Usher's acceptance speech at the 2024 BET Awards in June focused in part on the importance of co-parenting and how he looks up to others in the industry who do so successfully.

"I'm trying to — I'm turning a new leaf, you know," he said. "We got to be cool for the sake of the kids. I look at Swizz Beatz and his ex-wife and Alicia Keys and the fact that they managed to pull things together."

Usher, 45, also addressed his ex-wife Tameka Foster — whom he shares two children with — live on-stage, saying, "I'm trying, Tameka."

The pair's relationship, that lasted from August 2007 to November 2009, included public ups and downs through their divorce proceedings and public custody battles. Adding to the speculation of animosity surrounding the couple, it was rumored that Foster's relationship with Usher's mother, Jonnetta Patton, was rocky.

Foster, 53, clarified that her relationship with her ex-mother-in-law are calm during an interview with 'The Culture Club' in 2021.

"We're good. We had good holidays together, and that's another misconception," the fashion stylist said. "Everybody was like, 'Ohhh she hates you,' but it was never anything I felt once we were married."

"She [Patton] was cool. We didn't have a problem," she continued. "She just didn't want us to get married initially, but once we were married, you know, she was respectful and cool."

Foster even went on to speak highly of Usher's current wife Jennifer Goicoechea.

"I actually like her. She's cool. Like, she's been helpful I think," the California native said. "I don't see a hidden agenda."

From Foster's point of view, there is no reason to foster negative feelings. "This woman that he's with, this is somebody that was not involved in our relationship and there was no infidelity while I was with him with her. So, I like her. She's cool. We have a clean slate until she proves otherwise."

Foster appeared for WEtv's 'Bold & Bougie' reality TV show which premiered in February. Foster appeared alongside Malaysia Pargo, Gocha Hawkins, Princess Banton-Lofters and Crystal Smith in the series that followed the Atlanta women who try to dispel stereotypes.
