Eight celebrities died over the past week, triggering an outpouring of shock and grief from fans and peers.

Several of the deceased stars, including Shelley Duvall and Shannen Doherty, left their mark in the world of television and film.

Some were pop culture icons who were beloved across the nation.

Here are the eight celebrities who passed away from July 7 to 14.

Jacoby Jones - July 14

Football fans are mourning the death of former NFL player and Super Bowl champion Jacoby Jones, who passed away on Sunday. He was 40.

According to TMZ, Jones' family said in a statement that he died "peacefully" at his New Orleans, Louisiana, home.

A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Jones spent nine years in the NFL playing for teams such as the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

He helped the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.

Shannen Doherty - July 13

"Charmed" and "Beverly Hills 90210" actress Shannen Doherty died Saturday after a years-long battle with breast cancer. She was 53.

Her longtime publicist Leslie Sloane told People that Doherty was "surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie," when she passed away.

Richard Simmons - July 13

Fitness guru Richard Simmons died Saturday -- just a day after celebrating his 76th birthday.

TMZ reported, citing law enforcement sources, that police responded to Simmons' home in Los Angeles Saturday morning after receiving a call from his housekeeper.

He reportedly took a fall in a bathroom at his house the night before he was found dead.

No cause of death has been announced.

Dr. Ruth Westheimer - July 12

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a pop culture icon and renowned sex therapist, passed away at her home in New York City Friday at the age of 96.

Westheimer was "restful" and had her son and daughter by her side when she died, according to her publicist, Pierre Lehu.

"It was as peacefully as she could possibly go. She was 96," Lehu told People.

The former radio talk show host's cause of death has not been made public as of this writing.

A book Westheimer co-wrote with Allison Gilbert before her passing is set to be released in the fall.

Shelley Duvall - July 11

Hollywood lost another icon last week after it was announced that "The Shining" star Shelley Duvall had died. She was 75.

Duvall died in her sleep at her home in Texas Thursday due to diabetes complications, her longtime partner Dan Gilroy told TMZ.

According to Gilroy, the award-winning actress, who was also known for her collaborations with director Robert Altman, had been in hospice care and bedridden in her final months.

Dave Loggins - July 10

Dave Loggins passed away at Alive Hospice in Nashville Wednesday, Variety reported. He was 76.

The cause of death was not revealed.

Loggins topped the charts as a solo artist in 1974 with his song "Please Come to Boston."

He also scored a hit with his duet with Anne Murray, "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do."

Carol Bongiovi - July 9

Jon Bon Jovi's mother Carol Bongiovi died Tuesday, just three days before turning 84.

The former Playboy bunny, U.S. Marine and entrepreneur was hospitalized at the Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, at the time of her passing, Entertainment Weekly reported.

However, her exact cause of death remains unclear.

"Our mother was a force to be reckoned with," Bon Jovi said in a statement provided to the outlet by his rep. "Her spirit and can-do attitude shaped this family. She will be greatly missed."

Joe Bonsall - July 9

Celebrated tenor vocalist and Oak Ridge Boys member Joe Bonsall succumbed to complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Tuesday, the band announced last week. He was 76.

Bonsall battled ALS for four years before his death.

He retired from touring with The Oak Ridge Boys in January.
