Donald Trump's would-be gunman searched for information about high-profile figures before the shooting incident in Pennsylvania over the weekend, according to a report.

The former president was shot onstage during a rally at Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. The gunman was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20. He was killed by the U.S. Secret Service after he opened fire at Trump. The FBI has released new updates about the incident being investigated as an assassination attempt.

On Monday, the FBI investigators announced that they gained access to Crooks' smartphone to analyze his electronic devices in a bid to understand his motive. They discovered that he searched for information about multiple high-profile personalities, including one unnamed British royal.

Law enforcement informed the members of Congress through conference calls about their ongoing investigation on Wednesday, per The New York Times. Two officials told the outlet that Crooks' browsing history included searches related to Trump, President Joe Biden, FBI director Christopher Wray, Attorney General Merrick Garland and a member of the British royal family.

The bureau officials added that they "have found no indication that Mr. Crooks, who was a registered Republican, had strong partisan political views one way or another."

Meanwhile, the news that Crooks looked up a British royal sparked various speculations. Some claimed that the unnamed royal was either Prince Harry or Meghan Markle. However, others insisted it could be Kate Middleton.

"Why are the toxic press hiding the fact that the 'unnamed royal' the Trump shooter searched for was Kate Middleton? Expect to see articles implying a link to Harry & Meghan as a diversion from the truth that Willy & Kate inspire right-wing extremists," one posted on X, formerly Twitter.

"Harry & Meghan when the FBI didn't name the Royal he searched? If they believe it was Harry or Meghan they are confirming they need security," a second person wrote.

"Trump Shooter searched 'The Princess of Wales' I am sharing this because Harry & Meghan's Sussex squad are already trying to claim it was Harry who is in danger," another user commented.

A video taken years ago showing Trump's shooter seemingly getting bullied by his high school classmate has also resurfaced amid the investigation. The latter allegedly harassed him by pulling on his pant leg while he was sitting at his desk and using his phone.

A former classmate confirmed that Crooks was a loner because he was "bullied." He was reportedly made fun of due to the way he dressed.
