SpongeBob SquarePants is autistic, according to the beloved character's longtime voice actor.

Tom Kenny made the surprising revelation in a resurfaced clip from the 2024 Motor City Comic Con in Detroit earlier this year as the show "SpongeBob SquarePants" celebrated its 25th anniversary.

"SpongeBob's kind of on the spectrum too as a character," the famed voice actor said during a Q+A session at the May convention.

Kenny shared that he was previously approached by a fan "on the spectrum" and asked if SpongeBob was autistic.

"It was the first time I'd ever been asked this question -- a person who was obviously on the spectrum came up to me and said, 'Hey, I have a question for you, Tom Kenny. Is SpongeBob autistic?'" he recalled.

Kenny said he responded at the time: "'Yes, of course!'"

"I said, 'You know what? That's his superpower, the same way that's your superpower,'" he shared, causing cheers to erupt from the audience.

The clip -- and Kenny's comments -- was reposted on Instagram and X, formerly Twitter, where the voice actor received praise from fans.

"That's so cool," one X user commented. "I'm glad he sees it that way."

"Imagine how confident he made the kid feel," another wrote of Kenny's interaction with the fan.

A third user also gushed over Kenny, writing: "He's so supportive, love this!"

"Wait, this is so sweet," a different person tweeted. "SpongeBob is very autism coded for me so I am glad it was confirmed (I am diagnosed with it)."

Meanwhile, some users said they were not that surprised to learn that SpongeBob is neurodivergent.

"Love this...and everybody knew that already lol," one Instagram user commented on a repost of the clip by the Instagram account The Neighborhood Talk.

"We always knew he was on the spectrum, y'all ain't have to tell us," another declared.

"Fork found in kitchen #NotSurprised," a third user joked.

This was not the first time Kenny, who has voiced the Nickelodeon cartoon character since 1999, has talked about SpongeBob potentially having autism.

"I don't know what there is in that show that talks to kids that are on the autism spectrum, but more than other cartoons... because SpongeBob as a character is a little autistic," he said on Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast in 2012. "Obsessed with his job, very hardworking, gets really, really deep into something."
