Freddie Prinze Jr. has expressed his desire to join the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" reboot that Sony has been working on for some time following rumors that he and Jennifer Lee Hewitt could reprise their roles from the original movie for the project.

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly published Friday, Prinze Jr. seemingly admitted that he has already approached the producers and the team behind the reboot and started negotiating a potential involvement in the film.

"Nothing's a lock until there's ink on paper, until the contract's signed, but I'm definitely talking to them," the 48-year-old Hollywood actor said.

"And if we can make everything work -- and I know they wanna make everything work, I know I wanna make everything work -- then we'll try and make it work. But we gotta make sure everyone's schedules fit."

According to the '90s heartthrob, there are several reasons why he wants to be part of the reboot. One of them is because he knows director Jen Robinson, and he's rooting for her to make it big in the industry.

"I know Jen Robinson, the director [of the reboot], and I like Jen Robinson very much as a director and as a person. I think people like her are the future of this business. So there's a lot of good things that make me want to do the movie," he said.

Prinze Jr.'s interview comes after rumors swirled that he and Hewitt would likely reprise their respective roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James from the original movie in the reboot, as per Collider.

Aside from the two, the 1997 slasher film featured Ryan Phillippe and Prinze Jr.'s now-wife Sarah Michelle Gellar. The story follows four young friends who get stalked by a hook-wielding killer following a car accident.

Though the original film received mixed reviews, it performed well at the box office, achieving a worldwide gross of $125.5 million from an estimated $17 million budget, per IMDb. This helped the movie spawn a sequel, aptly titled "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," which saw Prinze Jr. and Hewitt reprise their roles for the big screen the following year.

In his recent interview, Prinze Jr. noted that for the reboot to happen, "everybody has to be happy with the script." He also reiterated that his involvement is still not confirmed "until a contract or deal is signed."

Nevertheless, the actor emphasized that he's eager to really join the reboot and everyone involved feels the same way. "I'm motivated, I know they're motivated. I know both sides are trying to make it work. And hopefully we do," he said.

Hewitt, for her part, has also expressed her desire to be part of the new film, telling Us Weekly, "Listen, I loved doing those movies. There is nothing more fun than doing a horror movie. It's the best. Julie James was awesome. I do think that there's unfinished business there, and so I would be happy to do it."
