Olympic Boxer Angela Carini Quits 46 Seconds After Punch By Imane Khelif Who Failed Gender Test: 'It's Not Right'
Olympic boxer Angela Carini, representing Italy, was left in tears after she quit a match against opponent Imane Khelif — who previously failed a gender eligibility test last year.
Lasting less than a minute, Carini backed down nearly 46 seconds into the boxing bout on Thursday, taking just one punch to the face within that time before she officially called it quits. Khelif, representing Algeria, was declared the winner.
As the two squared up, the Algerian boxer, who wore red, was seen landing one "solid" right hook before the Italian boxer, wearing blue, raised her hand and stepped to her coaches. It was then declared that Carini had forfeited the fight as the referee waved off the bout.
Reportedly, Khelif failed a gender eligibility test back in 2023 at the Women's World Championships in New Delhi, rendering the boxer disqualified hours before the gold medal performance. As Khelif raised a hand in victory, Carini fell to her knees in tears. Khelif is seen approaching the opponent to show a kind gesture, however Carini refused to acknowledge the contender, who was ruled the winner of the match.
"It's not right, it's not right!" Carini was heard expressing to her coaches, per 'The Independent'. The 25-year-old told reporters she had never been hit so hard in her life, as the athlete left the arena with a reported broken nose.

Carini held up her phone to show reporters her father, who is seen waving to the camera, while expressing her dedication to the competition.
"He said to me, 'Angelina, a champion is a bit like cycling...when they see the last kilometer, you know what they do? They pedal even harder. So you reach that last kilometer and pedal, go all the way because I'll always be with you'. And so I did, I fought with blood in my eyes because I wanted victory at all costs. Just for my father."
Try not to cry… Angela Carini talks about competing in the Olympics for her late father.
