The concert will feature performances by the Avett Brothers, Patti Smith, Colin Meloy (the Decemberists), Marcus Mumford (the Mumford and Sons), Jack White, Conor Oberst, and Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings. Stars from the film, Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, and Stark Sands will also be present at the concert.
Joel and Ethan Coen, and T Bone Burnett are producing the event, with some proceeds benefiting the National Recording Preservation Foundation. Tickets go on sale Aug. 21.
Set in the Sixties coffee-house folk scene of New York, the film garnered rave reviews at the 2013 Cannes film festival, winning the Grand Prix Award. It is loosely based on Dave Van Ronk's book, the Mayor of MacDougal Street. Capturing New York's Sixties cityscape and landmarks of Greenwich Village, the film's rustic score was overseen by Marcus Mumford (Mumford and Sons), T Bone Burnett, and Justin Timberlake. The film follows a week in the life of struggling musician, Llewyn, in wintry New York.
Llewyn is played by Oscar Isaac (Drive, Won't Back Down), the Guatemalan-American actor who is also a singer. In an interview with the Guardian the actor talked about playing the protagonist of the film:
"Being celebrated for playing someone who wasn't. Llewyn is like the Jesus character who had to be sacrificed for our sins. I get quite emotional about it. It's hard not sounding like a douchebag because it's like: 'Oh, I've been so successful for those poor people that haven't.' But I know those people; it could have easily just gone the other way for me too. There's very few people - like Shakespeare - who, no matter what, were gonna do what they did. For the rest of us there's a lot of events that have to happen in order for things to end up the way they are."
The film's cast is completed by Mulligan (who co-starred with Isaac in Drive), Goodman, Sands, Garrett Hedland (On the Road), and Timberlake, it also features Girls stars Adam Driver and Alex Kaporovsky in smaller roles.
The film will have a limited release on December 6, and a proper release on December 20. The film will also be screened at the upcoming New York Film Festival.
