George R. R. Martin, the author behind the best-selling novels that became the foundation for HBO's hit show "Game of Thrones" (GoT), has revealed that the intended sixth book in the series may never be released.

Martin explained that the highly anticipated sixth book of his series "A Song of Ice and Fire" has been repeatedly delayed for more than a decade, potentially to the point of no return, in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

"Unfortunately, I am 13 years late," he told the outlet. "Every time I say that, I'm [like], 'How could I be 13 years late?' I don't know, it happens a day at a time."

"But that's still a priority," he continued. "A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They are saying], 'Oh, he'll never be finished.' Maybe they're right. I don't know. I'm alive right now! I seem pretty vital!"

In November 2023, Martin said in an appearance on Bangcast that he had written 1,100 pages of the intended sixth book in the series, "Winds of Winter." However, 1,100 pages is the number he announced he had written of the book in 2022 as well on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Martin had intended for the book to bear more than 1,500 pages, but that progress on the book has proved to be slow.

Furthermore, conflicting projects Martin has been involved with, such as the television shows that take place within the GoT universe, have further prevented him from completing the novel in a timely manner.

Fans have also noted that "Winds of Winter" is not intended to be the final book in the series. Martin had previously announced a seven book, "A Dream of Spring," with which he intended to close the series out, as reported by IGN. However, many fans of the franchise are not holding out hope.
