'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Joss Whedon Reveals the Villain's New Design
When Ultron makes his appearance in the upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron, he won't be quite the same as fans may have seen in comic books.
Writer/director Joss Whedon is known for giving a well-worn story a new take and his Avengers sequel will be no different.
"I knew right away what I wanted to do with him," Whedon told Entertainment Weekly. "He's always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he's got a bee in his bonnet. He's not a happy guy, which means he's an interesting guy. He's got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff."
Whedon is creating an entirely new origin story for the villain. The robot will no longer be a creation of Hank Pym, also known as Ant-Man. Since Hank Pym will not appear in the Marvel cinematic universe until the Edgar Wright directed Ant-Man film in late 2015, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) will accidently create the Avengers latest foe.
"Loki is gone and the new villain will be the evil robot Ultron, who has the ability to keep upgrading his own strength, making him extremely fearsome," reads the latest casting call, according to Feature Film Casting. "Tony Stark/Iron Man becomes the unwitting creator of Ultron."
Filming for the 2015 release will begin in early 2014.
