Dakota Johnson has been cast as Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey, according to author E L James who tweeted the news on Monday.

Johnson, whose parents are former Miami Vice star Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, starred on the Fox sitcom Ben & Kate. She also had supporting roles in The Social Network, 21 Jump Street and The Five-Year Engagement.

The casting announcement follows months of rumors attached A-list stars to the role, such as Emma Watson, Shailene Woodley, Alicia Vikander and Analeigh Tipton. James' novel, the first in a trilogy, focuses on a young woman who finds herself involved in a sexual affair with the title character, Christian Grey. Charlie Hunnam was cast in that role on Monday as well, known for his role on Sons of Anarchy.

Focus Features will release Fifty Shades of Grey on Aug. 1, 2014. Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing the project.

Ironically enough, Johnson started her own Twitter account on Monday. Her first messages were about the Grey casting and she thanked followers for their support.

"Can officially say that I am casted as Anastasia in Fifty Shades of Grey with Charlie Hunnam as Christian. Shocked&wondering how to respond," she started off by saying. "Fam have been asking me if I'm excited, and I'm like have u read the book.Cos if I say I'm excited, they will say is this how we brought u up. Thanks for all the support everyone. Although, any chance y'all have the the script with you."
