Nina Davuluri made history when she was named Miss America on Sunday night, but her win led to racist remarks about her heritage.

The Indian-American and Syracuse N.Y. native, showed her pride with a Bollywood dance during the talent segment of the competition. Her patriotic dance and win were met with offensive and ignorant remarks from many Twitter users who criticized her background. Some called her a "terrorist" while others said she was affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

Some were far more supportive of Davuluri.

"I personally apologize for America's response to you winning. As a Vet for this country, I see you as an American and congrats," wrote user Tyler Johnson.

"I'm proud to have Nina Davuluri represent New York and America. We're all the same race: the Human Race. #stopthehate," wrote another.

Davuluri also brushed off the negativity in a news conference held after her win.

"I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American," she said, according to The Associated Press. "I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."

The 24-year-old competed against 53 other women who represented the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"I'm most excited to promote my platform, I was the first Indian Miss New York and I'm so proud to be the first Indian Miss America," she said after being crowned in Atlantic City. N.J.
