Miley Cyrus 'Bangerz' Review: 2013 Album Labeled an Intriguing But 'Disjointed Mess'
Miley Cyrus streamed her entire album Bangerz on iTunes Sept. 30, a week ahead of its official Oct. 8 release, and critics already have strong opinions about the record.
The former Hannah Montana star's fourth album is "a disjointed mess that seeks to provoke instead of delight," according to New York Daily News. Cyrus may be able to get attention and make headlines with her twerking skills and nakedness while straddling a wrecking ball, but she cannot seem to captive listeners with her album.
"There's no audio equivalent to twerking" and the review continues to say "the twerking twerp doesn't pull off a decent tune." Music is the element "we seldom think of when it comes to Miley."

USA Today was a bit less harsh in its review. The publication called out the record for its "predictable mediocrity" and in somewhat of a half-compliment, half-diss, added that Bangerz is "a collection of competent, mostly generic tunes that juggle self-conscious sass with glimmers of earnestness." One thing for certain, however, is that the album leaves listeners intrigued. Was Adore You written for Liam Hemsworth before they broke up? Is FU a shot at her former fiancé and when she talks about a guy cheating, is that taken from personal experiences? The album was given 2/4 stars.
Despite the somewhat harsh reviews by some, others seemed to enjoy Cyrus' tracks.
Us Weekly gave it 4/4 stars for being "the year's most titillating pop explosion."
Billboard noted that sometimes "the 20-year-old's vision needs to be adjusted, as on the manic French Montana collaboration FU and on Someone Else, which feels like the album's hundredth dramatic breakup song and plays for nearly five minutes." On the other hand, the album was praised for showcasing Cyrus' "daring attitude" guiding her to "invention." The review singled out 4x4 as a country mash-up with Nelly that "sounds awful in concept but is executed efficiently." Similarly, Do My Thang "could have been a sneering declaration of independence but invites the listener to share Cyrus' youthful glee."
Bangerz hits stores Oct. 8.
