Simon Cowell Invites Sinead O'Connor to 'X Factor' as Guest Judge After She Called Him "Murderer of Music"
Simon Cowell invited Sinead O'Connor to judge The X Factor after she recently called him a "murderer of music."
O'Connor, who was recently in the news for her spat with Miley Cyrus, lashed out at Cowell and Louis Walsh in an interview with The Late Late Show last week. After writing open letters to Cyrus, beseeching her to not allow herself to be sexualized and used by the music industry, the 46-year-old singer/songwriter went after Cowell and said he is responsible for "murdering music."
"I feel sorry for the murder of music and rock 'n' roll, which has happened because of the industry," O'Connor said in the interview. "Because of Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh. They've murdered music. I stand to say it on behalf of every musician in the world and they'll agree with me."
O'Connor also went on to talk about the commercialization of music and objectification of the artist, pointing the finger at Cowell and Walsh for encouraging the trend.
"The industry has taken over so much, the money-making side of it, that the sexualising of extremely young people making records, and all the worship with money and bling and diamonds, all the Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh - it all amounts to the murder of music and that's what concerns me," she said.
On Oct. 9, Cowell responded to O'Connor's accusations by inviting her to be a guest judge on his show.
"I think sinead o'connor would be a real fun guest judge on X factor. She loves the show and everything I do. Let me know sinead," he tweeted.
Following her spat with Cyrus, O'Connor's demanded an apology from the 20-year-old on Oct. 8. The Nothing Compares to You singer was also very disturbed by many of Cyrus' fans asking her to commit suicide. O'Connor posted a fourth open letter in response to the furor.
"No person, myself included, should wake to the types of emails and communications I have had for the last few days urging that I should kill myself," she wrote. "Nor to the type of Net abuse I have had to endure as a result of what you did."
She went on to ask the Wrecking Ball singer to apologize not just to her, but also to Amanda Bynes, whom Cyrus had previously compared her with.
"I would very much like you please to apologize to myself and Amanda Bynes for having perpetuated abuse of both of us on the grounds that Amanda has had mental health issues and that I experienced suicidal compulsion and was open about seeking help in order to save my life," she wrote.
