After Cowell selects hi final four "groups" acts, all 16 final acts will be announced by Lopez and will compete against each other on the live shows.
Host Mario Lopez explained the rules of the final four chair challenge last week. He announced that after each act finishes their performance, they will learn if they are "safe" or if they are eliminated from a chance to land a final four spot.
"4 chairs, 10 acts, but who will be left at the end?" Lopez asked the crowd on Oct. 2.
Lopez explained that "category-by-category, one-by-one," the acts will perform. Then, their mentor must decide whether or not to give them a seat or send them straight home. Even if the act is told they are "safe" if another act in the same category outperforms them, the prior act can still be eliminated.
"Nobody will be safe until the end," Cowell warned that night.
The X Factor's Four Chair Challenge concludes on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. EST/7 Central on Fox.
