'Orange is the New Black' Season 2 Spoilers: Kate Mulgrew Says It Will Be "Intriguing" & "Entirely Unexpected" [EXCLUSIVE]
Actress Kate Mulgrew, who plays Galina "Red" Reznikov in Orange is the New Black, talked with Enstars on Oct. 2 about her character and what to expect in season 2 of the Netflix series.
Mulgrew was very much in character during the interview, mostly sticking to the Russian accent she employs for her role on the show and only occasionally slipping into an American accent. She did take care to mention that she was very much American, hailing orginally from Dubuque, Iowa.
Mulgrew plays Red, the Russian head chef of the prison kitchen who doubles as matriarch/hard-task mistress to the inmates. Red's stone-cold exterior disguises her very compassionate core, which only emerges at times when Mulgrew allows glimpses of her character breaking down emotionally. One such instance was when Tricia -- who Red had been trying to help rehabilitate -- died in season 1.

"Well, I would suggest that she resides within me," Mulgrew said, when asked about how challenging it was to play the contradictions her character demands. "This is what happened at the audition, it was kismet, it was instant. I mean, that's a really hard thing, that kind of Russian coolness."
She also went on to speak about a closeness she feels to Red, saying, "She sprang with great dexterity into my imagination and into my heart and it's been a joy ever since."

When rodded for some plot reveals and hints as to how her storyline might unravel in season 2, Mulgrew was cautious about giving away too much, saying, "I can't really tell you that or I'll be shot at dawn!"
She suggested, however, that viewers should be prepared to be shocked and surprised: "I can tell you this, it's intriguing and entirely unexpected. Everything that you think will happen does not happen and everything that you want to happen, maybe happens, the unexpected reigns supreme."
