Ellen Degeneres Tip Video: Gives $10,000 To Waitress in New Hampshire
A Ruby Tuesday's waitress from New Hampshire is $10,000 richer after meeting daytime TV talk show host, Ellen Degeneres on Oct. 18.
Degeneres took her show sign off, "Be kind to one another," to another level and paid it forward for a waitress and bartender. Sarah Hoidahl picked up a $27.72 tab for two national Guard soldiers who were affected by the federal government shutdown.
In return, Degeneres gave the 22 year-old $27.75 in cash plus a check for $10,000 and a 50-inch big screen TV on her show.
Hoidahl told DeGeneres that the two female officers came into the restaurant and mentioned they wanted to keep their meal "light" since they were furloughed and not getting a paycheck because of the government shutdown.
"That just got me thinking, 'that's really difficult', I'm a waitress, single mother... I know how hard that is," Hoidahl said. "I just decided, 'I'm gonna do something good today. I'm gonna buy their lunch for them.' "
Instead of giving them a bill, Hoidahl handed the customers a note that read, "Thanks to the government shutdown people like you that protect this country are not getting paid. However I still am. Lunch is on me! Thank you for serving ladies! Have a good day! - Sarah :)"
DeGeneres found out about Hoidahl's good deed after the New Hampshire National Guard shared the news on its Facebook page. Ellen producers saw the post and told Hoidahl to come to the Ellen show.
