The Avengers Breaks $1 Billion; Makes Box Office History
The Avengers has crushed Avatar's box office record this weekend by becoming the first movie to break $100 million in its second weekend. The superhero movie is expected to gross over $1 billion worldwide by the end of Sunday - in only 19 days since its release.
The movie raked in $207.4 million in its opening weekend in the U.S., breaking the previous record set by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II. It is expected to bring in another $103.2 million by the end of the day. Internationally, The Avengers brought in $628.9 million so far.
Disney's chairman Robert A. Iger said in a statement: "We're obviously thrilled with the global success of 'The Avengers,' It's a fantastic movie and an extraordinary franchise that will continue with more great stories and compelling characters for years to come."
Disney is already planning a sequel to the film, according to Iger. No date has been set yet.
If Avengers continues to go strong next week, Disney's superhero movie is set to be in fourth place all-time worldwide. Other blockbuster films that have earned more than $2 billion worldwide are James Cameron's Titanic and Avatar. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II raked in a total of $1.3 billion worldwide.
