Katy Perry, John Mayer Dating News: 'Wants a Normal Relationship' & Boyfriend Inspired 'Legendary Lovers' New Song [VIDEO]
Katy Perry does not want her relationship with John Mayer to be the center of tabloid attention with reporters following their every move.
"I want to have a normal life with a normal relationship and I don't want to be forced to just hang out in a hotel room all the time," she told Entertainment Weekly for its Nov.8 issue. The 29-year-old said she shares "bits and pieces" about the couple's life together, but prefers to keep some details private.
"I keep enough to myself," she added. "I'm going to go on dates and movies and dinners and when I do it's not because I'm trying to garner any kind of publicity, it's because it's something that is just an inevitable byproduct of this life. It's never my main focus, it's never intentional. [My] ideal date is just dinner and a movie. It's so normal. And a hike, we love to hike."
Katy Perry Says About John Mayer Relationship 'We Fit Together,' Details
Perry and Mayer, 36, began dating in the summer of 2012 before breaking up and getting back together. They collaborated on a song for his album and he helped her record her new album, Prism.
"I think he's very proud of it," she said of Mayer's take on her record. "He's heard it over the process of me making it. I think his opinion is a priority for me, but also me being happy with it is probably a bit more of a priority. And also what the world thinks of it, and how boring would it be if I did censor myself and I wasn't able to write about real-life instances? I mean, that's just not what songwriters do - real songwriters write about their lives."
Katy Perry & John Mayer Attend Family Wedding Together
Mayer is the inspiration for the Prism track Legendary Lovers. Perry wrote the song's lyrics in an email that Mayer later looked at.
She said, "we had a long courtship before anything was [public], just writing letters to each other - and seeing 'legendary lovers,' it sounded so nice. Some things float into my mind, and I process them, and [then] I make songs about them."
The new issue of Entertainment Weekly is on stands Friday. Listen to the audio of Legendary Lovers below.
