Eminem New Album 2013 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' Review, Recaptures Honest, Aggressive & Clever Rhymes
Eminem delivers feisty rhymes as he takes it back to his old sound on his new album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, and fans will surely be satisfied.
The rapper recaptures the honest, aggressive and clever rhymes of the album's sequel, The Marshall Mathers LP, with songs like Brainless and Evil Twin. Eminem's eighth studio album, however, also revives some of the rapper's most disliked traits, including his use of the homophobic slur "f---ot" on the track Rap God.
The record's appeasing opening seven-minute-plus track, Bad Guy, is a continuation to his 2000 single Stan from the album's prequel, The Marshall Mathers LP. On the song, Stan's younger sibling comes back to avenge his brother's death.
While he makes fun of several famous figures, including Khloe Kardashian and Jessica Alba, throughout the album, the rapper also pokes fun at his pugnacious reputation on the song A--hole, which features Skylar Grey.
Eminem also enlisted Rihanna for the song The Monster and their latest collaboration works almost as well as their 2010 hit Love The Way You Lie.
As he often does, Eminem allows fans into his personal life as he discusses his relationship with his father and mother. While his angry feelings towards his father, who left the family when Eminem was an infant, remain the same, the rapper's view of his mother is quite different. This aspect may come as a big surprise to Eminem's fans.
On one of the album's most memorable tracks, Headlights, the rapper expresses love for the woman who raised him, Debbie Nelson. For the first time, Slim Shady says he forgives her for their tumultuous past and calls her "beautiful." The 41-year-old also reveals regret for his past actions, especially for writing the song Cleaning Out My Closet. Through the song's lyrics fans could assume that the rapper wanted no affiliation with Nelson, but with Headlights it's clear that he abhors their estranged relationship.
On another emotional and pleasant track, Stronger Than I Was, Eminem references one more relationship he misses. "We're still together in my head and you're still in love with me. Till I woke up to discover that that dream was dead," he sings about an old love. The song shows off Eminem's softer side, one that is worth listening to.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Eminem spoke about the pressure that came a long with making a sequel to The Marshall Mathers LP, which many deem his best record to date. Yet, the rapper managed to live up to expectations with the new album released 13 years later.
The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is streaming now on iTunes ahead of its Nov. 5 release date.
