The trailer for Angelina Jolie's film, Maleficent, which released on Nov. 13, features a glowering and cold Jolie threatening Elle Fanning.

The film is essentially a retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent. Jolie plays the female villain who casts a curse on the king's daughter Aurora, who is portrayed by Fanning. In this take on the fairytale, some empathy is shown toward Maleficent as she is shown as a complex character who had reason to seek vengeance and was not always evil.

The 38-year-old actress is seen mostly in silhouettes -- highlighted by the crown of twisted horns and cloak that she wears -- roaming her forest through the first half of the trailer. The clip shows Aurora seeking out the sorceress, whom she knows has been watching over her since she was born. "I know who you are, you've been watching over me my whole life," Aurora's voice soundtracks the clip which captures the idyllic and fantastical kingdom she lives in.

"I know you are there, your shadow has been following me ever since I was small," she adds. "Don't be afraid," Aurora says while asking Maleficent to reveal herself to her from behind the dark thicket of the forest. "I am not afraid," Maleficent responds. As Aurora ask her to come out from the shadows into the moonlight, Maleficent tells her that it is actually she who would be afraid if she were to do that. As the female villain reveals herself in the light, viewers get a first glimpse at the devastatingly beautiful yet threatening form of the character. Maleficent has piercing green luminous eyes and pointedly high cheek bones.

Toward the end of the clip, Maleficent is seen wreaking havoc as she summons up gnarly and thorny, menacing-looking trees from the ground.

The film is scheduled to release in May 2014.
