Cate Blanchett Lands Leading Role in New Movie ‘Carol’ as a Lesbian
Cate Blanchett, 43 will star as a lesbian in the new film 'Carol' alongside Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, 23 ("Alice in Wonderland".)
The movie is based on the 1952 book "The Price of Salt," by Patricia Highsmith, a romantic story following the relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York.
"The Price of Salt" tells the story of Therese Belivet, a stage designer trapped in a department-store day job, whose salvation arrives one day in the form of Carol Aird, an alluring suburban housewife in the agonies of a divorce.
They fall in love and set out across the United States, pursued by a private investigator who eventually blackmails Carol into a choice between her daughter and her lover.
The movie will be directed by John Crowley, produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and adapted by Phyllis Nagy.
Karlsen and Woolley said in a joint statement they were "thrilled to be working with Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska," according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Blanchett and Wasikowska are "two of the most talented actors working today," they said.
The movie starts shooting in February.
Details of the movie were given at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday during the third day of the event in France.
