'The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug' Poster Released & Soundtrack Streams Online [Trailer]
The soundtrack for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug was released online Nov. 15, ahead of the album's offical drop on Dec. 10.
A new poster for the film featuring Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) has also been revealed.
A trailer for the film alluded to a growing romance between Legolas and the elf Tauriel, but it seemed like this might be a one-sided affair. In the clip, a voice warned Tauriel, "Legolas has grown very fond of you, do not give him hope where there is none."
The film's soundtrack was written by Howard Shore and in the album's liner notes, director Peter Jackson talks about the composer's trascendental contribution to the film.
"His music soars and enriches way beyond its connection to our images. He truly has created an epic musical world of his own," Jackson wrote. "A unique sound like no other. A year from now, we will be able to listen to well over 20 hours of musical story telling, that starts with An Unexpected Journey, and concludes with The Return of the King. That is Howard's genius - he is carefully shaping this 6 part epic score as a fully unified narrative."
The entire soundtrack is available through Entertainment Weekly.
In Desolation of Smaug, Bilbo and his troop of dwarfs head toward the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their homeland while Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) encourages them to fight Samug the Dragon (Benedict Cumberbatch). Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) plays a key role in the film and the character will be reprised in the next installment, There and Back Again. Legolas will also feature in the last film of the trilogy but the nature of his role, which could also just be a cameo, has not been confirmed.
The film also features Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt), who can shift between the form of a man and bear.
Filming for The Hobbit: There and Back Again is already underway.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters Dec. 13. The Hobbit: There and Back Again is scheduled for release on July 18, 2014.
