'Flowers in The Attic' Remake: Trailer Features 'Mad Men's' Kiernan Shipka and Heather Graham, Reveals Glimpses of Incest [VIDEO]
The trailer for Lifetime's remake of Flowers in the Attic, which features Kiernan Shipka, Heather Graham, and Ellen Burstyn, was released on Nov. 14.
The first teaser for the upcoming remake of the 1987 film based on V.C. Andrews' novel of the same name is dark, chilling and disturbing. The clip starts with building nervous anticipation: "The book you were forbidden to read."
In the video, Burstyn looks incredibly severe and shrewish portraying the evil mother and grandmother who locks the bunch of siblings in the attic. In a slightly discomifting scene, Burstyn makes Graham strip in front of the family to punish her by giving her lashings on her back. After she is done she shouts, "I make the rules in this house and I execute the punishment!"
Cathy, Shipka's character, who is also seen pretty distraught through the clip, only finds solace in the arms of her older brother Chris (Mason Dye). The sexual relationship between Cathy and Chris was the most controversial part of the book and as is evident from the trailer the film does not censor those bits.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dye had confirmed that the film will feature the incestuous scenes.
"Will there be incest? Yes. We stay very true to the book," he said.
The 1987 film, which starred Kristy Swanson, Victoria Tennant, and Louise Fletcher did edit out the controversial parts of the book and deviated from the original content.
Academy-award winner Burstyn also spoke with EW, telling them that playing such a monstrous character sapped the life out of her and she was trying to recover now.
"I've been completely drained by the end of the day," she said. "I've been sleeping 11 hours a day. My psyche must be trying to clear it."
The film will be aired on Lifetime on Jan. 18.
