2012 Billboard Music Awards Kick Off Sunday: What to Expect?
The 2012 Billboard Music Awards will be held Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas featuring performances by Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry as well as a tribute to music legend Whitney Houston.
Dozens of artists are nominated in a total of 46 categories including Top Artist, Top New Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Female Artist and Top Duo or Group.
British singer Adele leads the nominations with 18 including top artist and top Billboard 200 album.
She is competing for Top Artist (the most prestigious award of the event) with Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry and Rihanna.
Others with multiple nominations include LMFAO, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.
The 3-hour event will be hosted by "Modern Family" stars Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell starting at 8 p.m. EST.
Presenters include Lisa Marie Presley, Wiz Khalifa, Luke Bryan, Robin Thicke, Brandy, Monica, Miley Cyrus, Taio Cruz, Gavin DeGraw, Gladys Knight, Julianne Hough, Natasha Bedingfield and Jeremy Sisto,
Jordin Sparks and John Legend are expected to sing a tribute to Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder will be honored with the Billboard Icon Award.
Performers include Chris Brown, Usher, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, LMFAO, The Wanted, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, Nelly Furtado, Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder.
Katy Perry will debut her new song "Wide Awake" at the event from her upcoming film "Katy Perry: Part of Me"
How are the winners selected?
Finalists for the "2012 Billboard Music Awards" are based on key fan interactions with music, including album, single and digital sales, airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on MySpace, Facebook and many of the other most popular online destinations for music. The awards will be based on the reporting period from Feb 28, 2011- March 1, 2012.
