Supernatural's John Winchester has never been a prime candidate for any 'Father of the Year' awards, but when the hunter's parenting techniques came under fire from fans following this week's episode, writer Adam Glass took to Twitter to explain that not everything is always black and white.

Although not featured in last Tuesday's "Bad Boys," the Winchester patriarch (previously played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) came into plot due to his decision to leave a 16-year-old Dean (Dylan Everett) at a boy's home after the teen gambled away the brothers' food money and was subsequently arrested for trying to lift food from a local store. Meanwhile, John sent his younger son to live with Bobby (Jim Beaver) for several months.

While live tweeting the episode, Glass responded to fan questions regarding the actions of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean's (Jensen Ackles) father.

"Let's put this in perspective #supernatural," Glass wrote. "Your wife dies at the hand of a demon and you find out that their [sic] is this whole world out there that you nor anyone else knows exist. So now you have to pick up that mantle while raising two boys. YEAH. Tons of mistakes waiting."

Glass also pointed out that there could have been numerous reasons why John didn't return quickly for either of his boys. Information lost in this "grey area" of the narrative is left largely to the imagination of the viewers.

"I personally think JOHN did the best he could under some really tough circumstances. Did he make mistakes? Pleanty [sic]," Glass explained. "But he loved the boys as much as he could with the grief he had suffered."

Although the Winchester brothers may not have always lead the perfect life, Sam and Dean will spend "Rock and a Hard Place" pretending to wipe part of their slate clean and pose as born-again virgins. Find out why by clicking the video below.

Supernatural airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on the CW.
