The New York Film Critics Awards gave its top honors to American Hustle, for best film, Robert Redford, for best actor, and Cate Blanchett, for best actress on Dec. 3.

Blanchett was awarded for her performance in Blue Jasmine and Redford won for All is Lost. While 12 Years A Slave is one of the frontrunners in the Oscars race, it lost to David O. Russell's American Hustle for Best Film. However, Steve McQueen did win the award for best director.

Jennifer Lawrence also won best supporting actress for her role as Rosalyn Rosenfeld -- Irving's (Christian Bale) reckless wife -- in American Hustle. The crime-drama film, which won for best screenplay, also stars Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams.

Jared Leto took the best supporting actor award for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

The NY Film Critics awards are usually not a good indicator for the upcoming Oscar aspirants. Last year's NYFC wins were way off. The critics circle awarded Zero Dark Thirty as best picture and its filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow for best director. Lincoln's Tony Kushner won for best screenplay. Rachel Weisz won best actress for her performance in The Deep Blue Sea. Matthew McConaughey won for Bernie and Magic Mike. None of these aspirants won the Oscar. Daniel Day Lewis' win for Lincoln was the only one that overlapped that year.

American Hustle hits theaters on Dec. 18.
