Beyonce's New Album Speaks Out Against Sexism On 'Flawless' With Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie [VIDEO]
The woman who declared that "girls run the world," sends another powerful message with a new song from her fifth studio album.
Beyonce, who often advocates for women's empowerment, released an unannounced and self-titled record early Friday morning that features the song Flawless.
The track is the continuation of Bow Down, which Beyonce released earlier this year. However, the 32-year-old is in no way asking listeners to be submissive. Instead, the song delves into the different expectations men and women are encouraged to have throughout their lives.
Flawless features a spoken citation from esteemed Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who adamantly speaks out against sexism. The excerpt comes from Adichie's "We should all be feminists," a speech she made for TEDxEuston, a program that aims to promote a new generation of African thinkers.
"We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls - You can have ambition but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man," she says. "Because I am female I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important."
She also raises the question, "Why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don't teach boys the same?"
As women's discrimination prevails in society, Beyonce's collaboration with Adichie is a refreshing new angle for mainstream music.
