BBC's Sherlock continues to garner attention for its upcoming season, which will be returning to the small screen in both the U.K. and U.S. in 2014.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the lead role of Sherlock, recently spoke to Wales Online on Dec. 19 about his character's development in the third series as well as his friendship with John Watson (Martin Freeman).

"There is a fantastic trajectory in Sherlock's character arc which is going from a position of not really fitting in and then doing incredibly well and forming a bond again with John," he said.

The actor went on to elaborate on the rebuilt bond between the two, indicating that Sherlock and Watson are in for quite the ride, which includes a conflict with a brand new antagonist named Charles Augustus Magnussen (Lars Mikkelsen).

"They have some extraordinary adventures in the first and second episodes and then in the third they are challenged by a situation and a master villain who brings him to his knees. What's exciting about the series is that Sherlock is in real peril," Cumberbatch added.
