On hiatus until its second installment of season 4, AMC's The Walking Dead continues to garner attention for its February return.

One of the questions that's surely on the minds of its enthusiasts is whether Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) baby Judith is still alive or not.

When the program last left off, Rick and his son Carl (Chandler Riggs) discovered the carrier that was used for the infant was bloodied and empty.

According to TV Guide on Dec. 17, the father and son will actually be by themselves for some time, as the latter will reportedly take on a potential leadership role as his father grieves the potential loss of Judith and the prison.

Character Flashbacks To Give Audiences 'A Deeper Look' Into Characters' Pre-Zombie Lives?

Showrunner Scott Gimple dished to the site about the complexities that lie ahead for the remaining Grimes, as they head into a walker-ridden world without the protection of bricks and fences.

"It's going to hit [Rick] in a way that we haven't seen before. If it's just the two of them, [Carl] is going to have to step up quite a bit because circumstances are wildly different and a lot will depend on him in terms of them just surviving. They don't have an awesome dual layer fence and brick buildings to hide behind. They're out in the world,' he said.

The Walking Dead is set to make its return to the small screen for episode 9, its mid-season premiere on Sunday, Feb.4 at 9/8 p.m. Central Standard Time.
