Despite early casting rumors that Denzel Washington could be playing Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2, another report is claiming that he is being considered for an entirely different role: Green Lantern.

A source recently told Nuke The Fridge that despite reports that Washington was being considered to play the villainous Lex Luthor, casting is actually hoping to get the Oscar-winning actor as Green Lantern.

As there have been many Green Lanterns through comic book history, the source specifies that he would be playing the Green Lantern John Stewart, a character first introduced in 1971. In the comics, Stewart is an older African-American architect who is selected to be the next Green Lantern in place of Hal Jordan. He soon becomes a key member of the Justice League of America.

With the possible inclusion of Green Lantern, Man of Steel 2 might be turning into a big introduction to the Justice League, D.C.'s answer to Marvel's Avengers. Already, the film will include Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. There are even early rumors that The Flash will appear in the film as well.

As for the main villain of Man of Steel 2, director Zack Snyder has all but confirmed that it will be Lex Luthor. Casting rumors have been swirling about who will play the iconic supervillain, from Washington to Bryan Cranston to Terry O'Quinn.

Man of Steel 2 a.k.a. Batman vs. Superman is scheduled for release in theaters on July 17, 2015.
