Ahead of the show's season 13 premiere later in the month, Keith Urban opened up for the first time about the relationship he has with his fellow American Idol judges in an interview published Monday, Jan. 6.

This season's judging panel have a great dynamic that translates on and off camera, the country singer told MLive.

"Before the cameras started rolling, I knew we had the chemistry and synergy that I hoped we could get behind the desk. It's really enjoyable to go to work," he said.

Urban is the only judge from last season still on the panel after rapper Nicki Minaj and pop singer Mariah Carey decided not to continue on the show. Randy Jackson, who has been with American Idol from the beginning, is returning this time around as a mentor.

Urban said that simply enjoying his job is what made him return as a judge on season 13.

"I like this process. I really love being a part of finding somebody," he said. "I love helping somebody grow, and watching them grow. Not to sound cheesy but, the thing I've loved about watching American Idol is seeing a diamond-in-the-rough talent. They've got nothing going on, except they've got 'It.' "

As far as working with new judge Harry Connick Jr., whose style has been said to be a little harsh, Urban said they are close friends.

"He has such a wonderfully twisted view of things. I'm right in sync with that for some weird reason as well," he said. "We're having a blast. He feels like my long-lost brother. He really does."

Season 13 of American Idol kicks off with a two-night premiere on FOX starting Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 8/7c.
