'Veronica Mars' Spinoff Series Set For CW Seed, Creator Rob Thomas Confirms Ryan Hanson's Involvement
In the wake of last year's movie announcement, Veronica Mars fans will now also be receiving a spinoff.
Announced during the Television Critics Association winter tour on Wednesday, the untitled spinoff is set to be featured on the network's digital platform, CW Seed, according to Deadline.
Seven year's after exiting primetime schedules in 2007, Veronica Mars made a long-awaited comeback when a series creator Rob Thomas and lead actress Kristen Bell launched a successful Kickstarter to fund a new movie. Now, CW president Mark Pedowitz has confirmed that Thomas will be at the helm for the new series.
"Rob and I spoke last night," Pedowitz said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "The show might not appear before the 'Veroinca Mars' movie comes out, but Rob is very excited to do something for CW Seed."
While planning for the series appears to still be in early stages, Deadline reports that character's from the original series - including Kristen Bell's title character, Jason Donhring's Logan Echolls, and Enrico's Colantoni's Keith Mars - may appear in the online version.
Thomas took to Twitter on Wednesday night to confirm former Veronica Mars actor Ryan Hanson's (Dick Casablancas) involvement in the project.
"The CW web series: a comedy featuring @HiRyanHansen attempting to put together a Dick Casablancas spin-off of #VeronicaMars. No date yet," Thomas wrote.
Since Seed is the networks proving ground for potential programs, the spinoff may have the opportunity to make the jump to primetime.
