James Franco's 'Child of God:' First Full-Length Trailer For Cormac McCarthy Adaptation Revealed [VIDEO]
A new trailer for James Franco's film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's (No Country for Old Men) novel, Child of God, was revealed on Jan. 21.
The film, which has been written and directed by Franco, is an adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy book, and premiered at the Venice film festival last year. It was also screened as a special presentation at the Toronto Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
Scott Haze (As I Lay Dying) stars in the film which is about an outsider turned serial killer in 1960s Tennessee. In a previously released teaser of the film, Haze's character, who is also the protagonist of the film, is introduced as being of "German and Irish bloods." The narrator's voice also added that "his name was Lester Ballard, child of God, much like yourself perhaps."
In the trailer, the spotlight is shone on the three main characters, played by Haze, Blake Nelson and James Franco. Nelson and Franco play cops who are out to arrest Lester and put an end to his killing spree. The clip begins with Lester being released from prison and Blake dropping a snide remark asking him about his immediate future.
"So what's your plan, what kind of meanness have you got laid out for next?" Nelson says in a heavy southern drawl.
As Lester is set up as an outcast, he is seen seeking vengeance by murdering people, and he is quite vicious and indiscriminate. Armed with a rifle, the beastly Lester is seen seeking people out in isolated spots and killing them in cold-blood. A scene where a young woman is seen begging for her life as Lester asks her to turn around and shoots her, is quite unnerving. Franco has sketched out a quite gruesome, no-holds-barred portrayal of the violence with this film.
