The Twelfth Doctor is sporting a brand new look and he appears more than ready to take on the monsters of the universe.

Last week, Whovians were given a slight glimpse of the Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) latest costume with a promotion for a new Doctor Who toy. Now the BBC has officially revealed an image of Capaldi in his very own threads and battle ready Doc Martens.

"He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics," Capaldi said, according to the BBC. "No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord."

Designed by Howard Burden, Twelve's look is fairly streamlined but it doesn't come close to simplicity of Nine's (Christopher Eccleston) with his modern leather jacket and slacks. However, Capalidi's statement regarding to "Rebel Time Lord" confirms an earlier comment made by showrunner Steven Moffat. As the series kick-starts a new cycle of regenerations, the Doctor is headed into the darker end of his personality.

"There would be little point in making as radical a change as we've made unless you're going to go quite different with the Doctor," Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine (via CultBox) "Our vague idea is... the last two Doctors have been brilliant, and have been your 'good boyfriend' Doctors. But the Doctor isn't always like that. There is the sort of Tom Baker, Christopher Eccelston end of the spectrum, where he is mad and dangerous and difficult."

Hopefully Capaldi's twelve will steer clear of the "Waters of Mars" level of dangerous.

Doctor Who should return to the BBC and BBC America this fall. Click the video below to see a behind-the-scenes clip from filming for the premiere.
