Executive producer Sue Vertue recently spoke to TV Guide on Jan. 30, and emphasized just how tough of a foe the manipulative antagonist will be for the detective. She even stated that he'll be bringing things out of Sherlock that the audience has yet to ever see.
"Charles Augustus Magnussen is the one villain that Sherlock Holmes truly hates. He never hated Moriarty actually. They sort of admired each other. They have the same kind of brains. Whereas Magnusson is just calculated. He really hates Moriarty," she said.

Vertue also added that Mikkelsen's character "preys on the weak. He's a blackmailer. He's just not nice."
